Reviews

This is not a quick read. Smith’s prose reads like poetry. She strikes images of fluidity that sink into the mind then the soul. I will keep this book in my library to read many times. It’s very different from her biography of Robert Mapplethorpe, “Just Kids.” Some of Mapplethorpe images are interspersed between chapters so reading it on Kindle they lose something—not their essence but they belong printed on glossy paper as most photographs. I have great respect for Smith’s obvious intelligence and soulful art whether revealed in words. It seems to me her art imbues her existence. A fine gem.
